2006 Showcase

The CQUniversity Showcase, held annually, is designed to provide staff with the opportunity to hear national and international speakers discuss current issues in learning and teaching in higher education. In addition, the Showcase provides a forum for CQUniversity staff to engage with their colleagues and hear about current practice at CQUniversity in a friendly and supportive environment.

In 2006 the theme for the Showcase is: 'Highways in Higher Education'

The vast majority of CQUniversity campuses are physically connected via Highway 1 in Australia . Others are connected by inland highways and highway routes in the sky. Our students and staff are also active travellers on the information highway. Highways evoke a sense of travel and destination, both of which our students undertake when they enrol at CQU: 'travel' in the learning journey they undertake, and 'destination' in the degree/s they achieve.

The notion of 'highways in higher education' recognises that CQUniversity has a physical presence that spans vast distances. It also provides the opportunity to explore three sub-themes related to 'highways and travelling', these are:

  • Academic Learning Journeys
  • Information Highway
  • Spanning the Distance

These sub-themes will be expanded in a variety of ways to relate to learning and teaching in higher education. For example, 'spanning the distance' can be explored in relation to cultural distances that may exist between learners and educators. Alternatively, this same theme might involve an exploration of how we might 'span the distance' between: issues of copyright and intellectual property, and the free sharing of knowledge and ideas. 'Highways in higher education' also acknowledges that HE is part of a wide network of institutions on a journey.

Some of the highlights planned for 2006 include:

  • Keynote presentations by:
    • Professor Sandra Wills - Director of CEDIR
    • Dr Timothy Duvall - University of Otago, voted one of Otago's best teachers
    • Associate Professor Justin Malbon - Dean, Faculty of Law, Griffith University
  • Special 'Capstone Address' by Professor Richard Johnstone, Executive Director of The Carrick Institute for Learning and Teaching in Higher Education
  • Showcase Reception, being hosted on CQUniversity Gladstone campus

Come and travel the highways in Higher Education.
