Learning and Teaching Scholarship and Research

Scholarship of Teaching and Learning

The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SOTL or SoTL) is a growing movement in post-secondary education. SOTL is scholarly inquiry into student learning which advances the practice of teaching by sharing this research publicly.

Dissemination for impact among scholarly teachers may be local within the academic department, college or university, or may be in published, peer-reviewed form. A few journals exclusively publish SOTL research, and numerous disciplinary publications disseminate such research, as well as a number of core SoTL journals and newsletters.

Terms closely related to the scholarship of teaching and learning are good teaching (that which promotes student learning and desired outcomes and is recognised by student satisfaction, peer review, etc.) and scholarly teaching (in which teaching is regarded as an area of study and the teaching and learning knowledge base is regarded as an additional discipline in which to develop expertise).

Research into Learning and Teaching

A range of Research into Learning and Teaching is undertaken at CQUniversity. Further information can be found on the sites listed below.

Learning and Teaching Education Research Centre
Concerned with identifying the underpinning research required to drive teaching and learning at CQUniversity.

International Education Research Centre
An applied research centre which seeks to assist CQUniversity in ensuring that our academic programs are informed by our own research. IERC's agenda embraces four broad themes: pedagogy/learning and teaching, educational pathways and outcomes, research and evaluation, the business of higher education.

Office of Research
Information for all CQUniversity researchers, including ethics information.

Researching Learning and Teaching Practice

Learning and Teaching Grants
CQUniversity is an innovative and flexible learning organisation that seeks to adopt and implement pedagogical approaches and learning technologies that maximise the effectiveness of its student learning. The University acknowledges the need to carry out research that will ensure the organisation's competitive edge. Learning and teaching grants are offered annually to university staff who are interested in conducting research that will directly contribute to learning, teaching and assessment enhancements at CQUniversity.

Communities of Practice
Communities of Practice (CoPs) are about bringing together people with common interests to SHARE practices and build knowledge. CQUniversity's CoPs cover a diverse range of interests, and are cross disciplinary, cross faculty, and cross campus. Being involved in a CoP can help you validate your own practice and learn how others have solved problems in a shared area of interest. Research outputs may arise from the group but research is not the driver; sharing thoughts, practices and ways of doing things is the key.

Special Interest Groups
LTERC provides the opportunity for research colleagues to come together within special interest groups. Depending on research interests and activities, members may belong to one or multiple SIGs.
