This workshop will demonstrate what research tells us influences assessment decisions and grades.
Participants will engage in activities that focus on key elements of assessment within a course and strategies for overcoming:
(1) unintended biases and consequences in grading
(2) containing academic and student 'hoop jumping' tasks that add to workloads and
(3) students' surface approaches to assessment tasks
Associate Professor Janice Orrell, Director - Discipline Based Activities, Resource Identification Network and Special Projects at the Carrick Institute for Learning and Teaching in Higher Education, formerly of Flinders University. At Flinders, Jan was responsible for academic development programs in education and research. Her particular research interests are assessment in higher education, work-integrated learning and assessment in professions-based degree programs and non-formal education.
