Abstract

Communities of Practice (CoPs) are cited in higher education literature and ALTC applications as a successful way of building and sharing a scholarly approach to enhancing learning and teaching practice. However there is still limited evidence of effective implementation approaches in Higher Education.

In this presentation Dr Jacquie McDonald:

  • draws on her experience of initiating, facilitating and sustaining the successful community of practice initiative at the University of Southern Queensland;
  • outlines the adaptation of CoP theory to the USQ Higher Education context and presents a robust organising framework to address the essential elements of Communities of Practice; and
  • explores some of the challenges of starting and sustaining CoPs, as well as offering an overview of CoP start-up processes.

USQ CoPs received a 2009 AUQA commendation for ‘the creative space it provides for academic staff through the Communities of Practice to share good practices and continue professional conversations across faculties.'
