Congratulations to the recipients of the Awards for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (Tier 2) 2011

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and Research)

Deputy Vice-Chancellors' Awards for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (Tier 2) recognise a staff member's (or team's) significant contribution to student learning  within the Division of Academic and Research.

Ms Nona Muldoon - Office of Learning and Teaching
Since joining CQUniversity in 2006, Ms Muldoon has focused her approach on curriculum alignment and consistently initiates innovations in learning and teaching. Her focus is on curriculum alignment  and she fosters collaboration to enhance the quality of teaching and the student learning experience. Nona's scholarly endeavours have been nationally and internationally recognised through dissemination activities and publication. Nona was selected to receive this award for excellence in research-informed curriculum innovations that enhance the quality of teaching and the student learning experience in professional education.

Graduate Attributes Assurance Team (Ms Robyn Donovan, Mr Colin Beer, Mr Damien Clark, Dr Julie Fleming, Mr Rolley Tickner) - Office of Learning and Teaching
The Graduate Attributes Assurance Team has facilitated significant enhancements to programs and courses, across the undergraduate curriculum at CQUniversity, through development of an innovative online mapping tool. The mapping tool and process was developed and refined to encourage Course Coordinators' and Heads of Programs' engagement in assuring that their curricula develops students' generic attributes and also provides them with a simplified way to audit the stages of mapping. The Graduate Attributes Assurance Team was selected to receive this award for improving course quality by harnessing technology to implement a collaborative, university-wide approach to curriculum mapping, aimed at integrating graduate attributes across undergraduate programs.

Faculty of Arts, Business, Informatics and Education

Faculty Awards for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (Tier 2) recognise a staff member's significant contribution to student learning  within the Faculty of Arts, Business, Informatics and Education.

Children's Theatre Workshop (Mr Kim Kirkman and Dr Ian Gaskell)
School of Creative and Performing Arts
Since 2006 the CQUniversity Children's Theatre Workshop has produced educational, award winning theatre for 4-6 year olds. Mr Kirkman and Dr Gaskell have embedded innovative concepts into theatre pedagogy and their workshop projects have been institutionally, as well as nationally, recognised. The team was selected to receive this award for enhancing student engagement by developing and implementing student-centred learning and active learning concepts in the creation of children's theatre projects.

Mrs Sherie Elliott, School of Education
Mrs Elliot consistently demonstrates creativity in curriculum development, passion for teaching and dedication to improving student learning outcomes.  Sherie was selected to receive this award for providing the essential support, encouragement and guidance to motivate and engage bridging students, especially through the provision of innovative and creative resources and curricula.

Mr Michael O'Malley, School of Information and Communication Technology
For thirteen years Mr O'Malley has been committed to providing a fresh, personalised approach to resource development and lecturing in Information Technology, at CQUniversity. Mike was selected to receive this award for developing an innovative, engaging, and personalised method of teaching complex concepts in programming for first year students that motivates and inspires learning.

Dr Julie Willans, School of Education
Through her creation of a respectful and supportive classroom environment, Dr Willans has had a positive influence on student learning for a decade. Through activities that promote greater appreciation of personal learning preferences, she challenges her learners to deconstruct negative assumptions about themselves as learners, encouraging them to embrace transformed ways of thinking about themselves. Julie was selected to receive this award for creating a respectful and supportive learning environment in which mature age students feel ‘safe' to explore and develop their potential as individuals.

Faculty of Sciences, Engineering & Health

Faculty Awards for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (Tier 2) recognise a staff member's significant contribution to student learning  within the Faculty of Sciences, Engineering and Health.

Associate Professor Peter Reaburn,   School of Medical and Applied Sciences
Associate Professor Reaburn has been an academic staff member with CQUniversity for more than a decade and his commitment to his discipline and to excellence in learning and teaching has been demonstrated by his impact on student learning outcomes. Peter was selected to receive this award for applying inspirational and student-centred teaching strategies and research-based assessment practices, to achieve outstanding long-term student learning outcomes through exercise physiology courses.

These awards will be presented at the annual Staff Awards Ceremony on November 4th 2011 and the recipients' excellent practice may be ‘showcased' at CQUniversity's Learning and Teaching Showcase, to be held on November 29th 2011.

Many of our past CQUniversity Award winners have offered their time to mentor our new applicants through the process. A list of Award Mentors, for peer support, is available on the Office of Learning and Teaching website. Staff who are considering applying in 2012 are encouraged to make contact with one of the mentors to obtain support and guidance and to enhance the application.

Due dates for nominations for Tier 1, 2012 will be advertised via appropriate forums at a later date.
