Role of CQUniversity Staff

Role of Academic Supervisor

The Faculty of Arts, Business, Informatics and Education appoints an Academic Supervisor for each student for the period of their Co-op placement. Supervisors will check student's progress by phone and email during the placement. The University Careers and Employment Service will inform the student, the employer and the industry supervisor of the name of the academic nominated.

The industry supervisor is normally the person to whom students report, and who plans and monitors student work on behalf of the organisation. That person liaises as required with the University Careers and Employment Service on the student's progress. The industry supervisor is also requested to complete an "Evaluation of Performance" form to be returned to the University Careers and Employment Service upon completion of the student's industrial placement.

Role of University Careers & Employment Service

One key role of the University Careers and Employment Service is to assist students to obtain a Co-op placement in an area related to their studies. As well as maintaining a strong liaison with employers to match students to their requirements, the University Careers and Employment Service delivers a Professional Practice and Preparation Course to students covering topics including: career planning and management, self-assessment, career exploration, career changes, resume writing, communication skills, selection criteria, interview techniques and transition from study to work. Additional careers counselling about placements is offered to students when necessary. The University Careers and Employment Service will also arrange for a site visit during the placement to meet the industry supervisor and student whilst on placement.

The Coordintor, Careers and Employment Service is also a first point of contact between the Faculty and industry for all areas of liaison and cooperation.

Being a Co-op employer means more than just employing students on work placement. We trust that employers will become fully involved in a range of activities including:

  • Curriculum design and development
  • Guest lectures
  • Site visits
  • Cooperative research and consulting
  • Cooperative development of training programs graduates.
