Drama Specialisation

Offered on Mackay Campus Only

The CQUniversity Drama Experience

Bring up the curtain on your Acting career!

Since 1996, CQUniversity (Australia) has concentrated its theatre training on students aspiring to careers on the musical stage. Now, with our enviable reputation in this field widely acknowledged, we have introduced a startling, unique and innovative applied drama pathway to complement and extend our expert offerings in theatre tuition.

Based on the uncompromising belief that the training of the ‘stage actor' remains central to the actor's craft, we have designed a cognate program that incorporates the acquisition of core qualities in voice and movement, in conjunction with the development of the primary acting skills. Not satisfied with developing only freedom through improvisation, connection, self-awareness, expressive ability, characterisation, flexibility and agility, the program has specific concentrations in:

  • The Greek Tragedies (Euripides, Aeschylus and Sophocles)
  • The European avant-garde (Brecht, Grotowski and Brook)
  • Commedia dell'arte and Shakespeare
  • Restoration
  • Comedy of Manners
  • Theatre ‘realism' (Shaw, Ibsen and Chekhov)

And associated study areas in:

  • Dramaturgy
  • Make-up
  • Acting for film and television
  • Acting in emerging digital media environments

At CQUniversity we have a firm conviction that training in the craft of acting involves the acquisition of core qualities in voice and movement as part of the development of primary acting skills. In addition to encouraging vocal and physical flexibility, the program provides you with opportunities to explore and develop your imagination and performance skills through a wide range of theatre production. The practical performance applications are supplemented by a firm grounding in dramatic literature, theatre history and drama theory as well as opportunities to gain experience in a number of production-related areas such as lighting, sound and stage management.

We aim to train you to work within a fast-changing multidisciplinary arts environment whilst providing the framework for you to undertake roles and requirements in any live presentation medium.

Located on the beautiful Central Queensland Coast at the CQUni Mackay campus, the program is based within an iconic, purpose-built facility. This specialised teaching and learning centre, opened in 2001, is a national centre of excellence in integrated theatre training. Other courses offered as part of the Bachelor of Theatre include a specialisation in Music Theatre.

The program scaffolds student learning through a sequence arranged for skills acquisition in:

  • Stagecraft
  • Carpentry
  • Stage and production management
  • LightingSoundDesign
  • Technical direction

And associated study areas in:

  • Academic studies in the history of western theatre and dramatic literature
  • Electives from the full range of CQUniversity course offerings

The scene shop includes areas for carpentry, metal work, electrics, a costume shop, wardrobe and properties construction. These spaces, in conjunction with a new audio/video production lab, will allow students to work on individual and collaborative projects, supervised by expert staff. Students taking this specialisation will have the opportunity to crew, stage-manage, design, and build sets and costumes for productions directed by leading industry professionals.
