Judith Brown

Professor Judith Brown AM is the Head of College - The Arts in the School of Education and the Arts as well as the Director of the Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music within CQUniversity Australia. She supervises masters and doctoral students in the creative and performing arts.

Judith is the leading CQUniversity academic responsible for the sustained operation and development of Choices and Safety Circus Applied Theatre projects. Established in 1999, Choices promotes key safety messages around alcohol, drugs and sexual activity to Year 12 students before they embark on their end of year celebrations at Schoolies. In 2017, Choices won national recognition, receiving the Community Engagement Award at the Australian Financial Review Higher Education Awards.

Judith performs regularly as both a solo and collaborative pianist. She has performed with some of Australia's leading classical musicians and is also an accomplished performer of music theatre and cabaret genres. Her doctoral thesis built on this creative practice, using autoethnography to examine the experience of flow in collaborative music performance as a piano accompanist.

Her research interests include performance pedagogy and lifelong learning in the performing arts. She has published internationally and nationally on these issues.

Judith was a consultant editor for the Australian Music Examinations Board (AMEB) for their Series 3 Piano for Leisure publications (Grades 5 to 8) and has served on the Queensland Advisory Committee of the AMEB.

In 2013 Judith's contribution to the arts in Queensland was recognised when the Queensland Government appointed her as a Culture Champion. In 2017 she was awarded a Member (AM) of the Order of Australia in the General Division, for significant service to music education as an academic teacher, to professional organisations, and to the community.

Her other achievements include winning the CQUniversity Vice-Chancellor's Teacher of the Year Award in 2009 and the Australian Learning and Teaching Council (ALTC) Citation for outstanding contributions to student learning in 2010.
