CQUniversity Bachelor of Theatre students are stepping on stage with a purpose this month as they present their end-of-year performance of The World Goes 'Round.

The incredible ensemble of students will showcase their talents during three performances at the Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music (CQCM) from 20-22 October 2023.

Filled with nonstop, toe-tapping melodies, The World Goes 'Round is a poignant celebration of life and the indomitable fighting spirit that keeps us moving forward.

To coincide with the important messages portrayed the iconic production, the CQCM students will for a second year be participating in Frocktober, a month-long fundraiser to raise awareness and funds for ovarian cancer research.

With ovarian cancer continuing to be Australia's most lethal gynaecological cancer, taking more than 1,000 lives each year, the students have committed to changing these statistics through their dedicated fundraising campaign for the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation (OCRF).

In the lead up to opening night, the students will be showcasing the elaborate costumes featured in the production on The Conservatorium’s social media platforms.

Head of Course for the Bachelor of Theatre, Dr Linda Lorenza said the students have used the performance as an opportunity to champion the philosophy of embracing life to the fullest, but also change the story for future generations.

“The production starts with a reminder that no matter life's ups and downs the world keeps turning (And the World Goes 'Round).

“We want to do our part and use the power of the arts to help change the statistics and give those diagnosed with ovarian cancer a greater chance of survival. Research is the answer.”

Every dollar raised by Frocktober participants supports the OCRF in their mission to develop an early detection test, as well as more personalised, targeted therapies to treat ovarian cancer.

Dr Lorenza added that the Australian arts industry recently lost two wonderful performers, Tarryn Fiebig and Jacqui Dark, to ovarian cancer, further signifying the need for greater funding for these potentially life-saving ovarian cancer research projects.

"Many of our students have looked up to these artists' amazing careers, providing inspiration for what they may achieve in the future.

“We hope that our fundraising campaign will serve as a tribute to these great talents and contribute to the essential work of OCRF.”

This year’s Guest Director Maureen Bowra said she was continually impressed by the commitment and talent of the CQCM students.

“Putting together a major musical in three weeks is no easy job, but coupling that with a Frocktober campaign certainly demonstrates the passion of these students,” she said.

“The audience will be immersed in the story of each individual song as the show is filled with the incredible back catalogue of tunes by powerhouse composing duo, Kander and Ebb.

“There is something for absolutely everyone – laugh out loud comedy moments, spectacular choreography, glitzy costuming and gorgeous storytelling by wonderful performers.”
