Scholarship ambassador adds value and sidesteps career with double degree
Deciding to enrol into university simply to challenge himself has paid dividends for Jake Gries.
Now a Project Manager, scholarship ambassador, CQUniversity alum and the holder of a double degree, Jake has carved out a niche career that sees him highly sought after in his role.
Graduating from CQUniversity in 2023 with a Bachelor of Business and Property, the Cairns local said his study journey wasn’t without its fair share of sacrifices, but he wouldn’t have had it any other way.
“I was working full-time and studying part-time, but the sacrifices along the way were totally worthwhile,” Jake said.
“I was prompted to start studies as a challenge to myself and to complement my professional experience, and I found that there is a sense of pride and achievement from the simple decision to do something for your own growth and development.”
With career aspirations in property development and previous experience in construction project management, Jake currently holds the role of Project Manager for advisory, engineering and design firm Aurecon, and said that his professional experience combined with his CQUniversity studies had allowed him to curate a niche skillset and perspective to his role.
“My previous experience was in construction and I began my degree thinking I would strike out on my own as a property developer,” Jake said.
“Those plans may need to be put on the back burner for now though. My studies from CQU opened up the opportunity to sidestep into a new career where I’m learning and growing in a new direction.”
“I now combine my previous experience with my studies to provide what has proven to be a valuable skillset for clients.”
While at university, Jake received a New Colombo Plan (NCP) Mobility Grant and was afforded the opportunity to undertake a learning abroad program in Fiji for two weeks where he learnt the value of investing into another culture.
Now CQUniversity’s NCP Alumni Ambassador for 2024, Jake provides advice to current students and potential scholars, along with advice and feedback to academics who may want to include correlating content in their curriculum.
“During my exchange trip I learnt the value of really researching and learning about the country you’re visiting; not only to gain an understanding of the culture, but more importantly to provide the most value to the country and the people you’re visiting,” Jake said.
“For any future or current student considering a scholarship opportunity, I’d encourage you to go for it – like anything, you have to show up to be counted,” Jake said.
“Go out and seize the day – you’ll have no regrets, and it may just change your life.”
The New Colombo Plan is a signature initiative of the Australian Government which aims to lift knowledge of the Indo-Pacific in Australia by supporting Australian undergraduates to study and undertake internships in the region.
