Filmmaker turns camera on regional stories
Soren Jocumsen is making a name for himself in the creative arts industry with the CQUniversity Bachelor of Digital Media graduate sharing inspiring stories through film.
The Makay local credits his time at CQU for not only honing his skills and broadening his understanding of digital media, but for providing the emerging filmmaker with invaluable opportunities to work with experienced mentors and gain real-world experience.
“I was drawn to CQU because it was available in my hometown of Mackay, and I had great experiences with the university through high school tours and previous studies,” Soren said.
"Initially, I was studying a Bachelor of Engineering at CQU, but I’ve always had an interest in media and content creation and
“The support offered, and the flexibility of mixed-mode learning really stood out to me.”
Soren’s talent and dedication have already left an impression on regional audiences with the aspiring film maker profiling first-term Mackay councillor Heath Paton in a short documentary.
"Having known Heath through earlier projects and community events, I found his story of rising from humble beginnings to being a barber, business owner, and now a council member incredibly inspiring," Soren said.
"The biggest learning curve was understanding how much time is involved in planning and shooting. But seeing the final product made it all worthwhile.
"The unit encouraged us to work on real-world projects, and the support I received made me confident in tackling such an ambitious task.”
Since graduating Soren’s work has continued to receive critical acclaim with a short film he completed as part of his studies selected for the upcoming Capricorn Film Festival (16-19 January).
The Pursuer is a thrilling exploration of isolation and expectation, telling the story of a lone mechanic’s eerie encounter on desolate rural roads.
"The story was inspired by the complicated but relatable relationships we have in life. My goal was to immerse viewers in the emotions and fears of the protagonist," Soren explained.
“I was excited and shocked that my solo-made film was recognised by such a notable regional festival.
“It’s a testament to the initiative and creative eye that my studies at CQU have helped me develop.”
CQUniversity Bachelor of Digital Media Unit Coordinator Jim Picton congratulated Soren on his success.
“Soren has consistently demonstrated exceptional creativity, dedication, and initiative in every project he’s undertaken,” Mr Picton said.
“His work exemplifies the technical and narrative aspects of filmmaking we aim to cultivate at CQUniversity.”
Utilisng his background in screen production and graphic design, Soren is now setting his sights on a career in film and content creation.
“I’m aiming to secure roles in video editing and content creation while continuing to make short films for festivals,” Soren said.
“I want to push the boundaries of cinema and tell stories that leave viewers with a new appreciation or perspective.”
