Karen Sasaki’s dedication and determination has earned her CQUniversity’s inaugural CQUEnglish Scholarship.
The CQUEnglish Scholarship is awarded to outstanding students based on their English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS) scores, main university academic performance, and alignment with the University’s core values.
The scholarship aims to support students who demonstrate exceptional academic achievements and a commitment to CQU’s values of engagement, can do, openness, leadership and inclusiveness.
Karen was presented with her award last month, with representatives from the International Admissions team, ELICOS students and a group of study tour students from Meikai University, Japan, celebrating her success.
She said she was “honoured” to receive the scholarship.
"It’s rewarding to see my hard work recognised, and it motivates me to keep improving and making the most of my studies,” she said.
CQU English Senior Language Teacher Joshua Blinco said Karen began her CQU journey by undertaking the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) course at the Brisbane Campus, where she stood out as an excellent student.
“Always present and engaged, Karen was a great critical thinker who always had time to mentor others in class,” he said.
“She completed her first term in the Master of Construction Management program in Term 2 of 2024, where she distinguished herself with high academic achievement. Karen is an exemplary student who is active in both her class and the University community.
“We are thrilled that she has been awarded the prestigious CQUEnglish Scholarship. This scholarship is a testament to her dedication, hard work and academic excellence.
“We look forward to seeing her continued success.”
Karen said studying EAP at CQU was a “transformative experience”.
“The course has not only improved my English skills but also helped me build confidence and a deeper understanding of academic life in Australia. The encouraging environment during classes made my learning journey enjoyable and rewarding," she said.
