Powering up renewable energy innovation
CQUniversity is set to spark innovation and advance the renewable energy sector through a new initiative in the Gladstone region.
The Enhancing Renewable Innovation in Regional Queensland program will empower students and entrepreneurs through targeted programs that promote a thriving innovation ecosystem, workforce development, and career pathways in renewable energy.
This initiative is supported by Advance Queensland, as part of the Regional Enablers Program, which aims to boost local opportunities for Innovation Driven Enterprises to start and grow across Queensland's diverse regions.
CQUniversity received close to $300,000 and was one of 15 regional innovation organisations successful in Round 1 of the program.
The three-year initiative is led by CQU’s Associate Professor Linda Pfeiffer, Dr Cal Devney, Associate Vice-President Luke Sinclair and STEM and Innovation Coordinator Kathryn Tabone.
“Collaboration and innovation are key to improving the advancement of energy transformation globally,” Assoc Prof Linda Pfeiffer said.
“Energy transition and environmental innovation is everyone’s business, and this program is designed to be inclusive. It offers the local community in regional Queensland the opportunity to be a part of Gladstone’s future.”
The program will consist of four key components:
- An annual student innovation challenge to inspire and develop emerging talent
- Industry/business information and networking sessions to foster collaboration and knowledge sharing
- Capacity building and education to support local businesses and entrepreneurs
- An opportunity for local innovators to attend the Tropical Innovation Festival in Cairns each year.
Additionally, the program includes a research component to assess its impact on regional innovation.
The Enhancing Renewable Innovation in Regional Queensland program will be officially launched at CQUniversity Gladstone Campus on 20 March, from 4–6pm.
The event is open to all community members with opportunities to connect local businesses, problem-solvers, and innovators with resources, innovation pathways, and industry networks to accelerate renewable energy solutions in Gladstone.
A highlight of the launch will be a keynote address from Dr Emma Whittlesea, Head of Partnerships at Stralis Aircraft.
Stralis Aircraft is at the forefront of sustainable aviation in Australia, designing and manufacturing next-generation hydrogen-electric aircraft. Their work is helping shape the future of clean flight, by reducing carbon emissions and pushing the boundaries of innovation.
Dr Whittlesea will share insights into the role of hydrogen in aviation, the challenges and opportunities for regional innovators, and how solving real-world problems can lead to groundbreaking advancements in technology and sustainability.
