CQU's training helps Hayden find the right 'fit' to launch his career in the sports sciences

Hayden Baker's natural talent and passion for CQUniversity's fitness training has helped him land a job at CrossFit Gladstone.

The 16-year-old is currently studying his Certificate III in Fitness at CQU through the Start TAFE Now program' while using the skills and knowledge he's acquired as a CrossFit Mentor.

"The Certificate qualification has enabled me to gain skills to be independent and learn the importance of commitment' perseverance and how to ask for help' thanks to CQU's supportive Fitness Team'" he said.

"I believe that these skill sets greatly improved my abilities and helped me gain employment at CrossFit Gladstone."

Hayden said he has received a lot of support from CQU and CrossFit Gladstone while undertaking his studies.

"I enjoyed the course as it helped develop my understanding of the fitness industry and how the workplace operates.

"I also appreciated that the theory I was learning related directly to my practical activities. My fitness teacher Ashlee Battersby was very supportive and encouraging of my progress."

Hayden completed the majority of his practical work experience at CrossFit' securing an additional Certificate II in Sports and Recreation' which ultimately led to him being offered an internship.

"I am grateful this qualification has provided me with a part-time job whilst at school in an industry that I enjoy.

"At the moment I am working towards a career in sports sciences and physiotherapy. My current plan is to study in a field in that area through university."

CrossFit Gladstone owner Adam Gibson said it has been wonderful to watch Hayden grow in his understanding and confidence.

"We have enjoyed having him in the CrossFit Community'" Mr Gibson said.

Hayden encouraged anyone considering studying fitness to give it a go.

"I think people who are interested or have a passion in the sports/ fitness industry will find a lot of enjoyment from the practical sessions and expand their knowledge within the theory content' which may direct them towards a career in fitness'" he said.

The CQU Start TAFE Now program allows high school students in years 10'11 and 12 the opportunity to study a range of vocational education and training (VET) courses as part of their Queensland Certificate of Education' providing practical hands-on training and valuable skills for greater employability.
