Central Queensland residents flock to CQU TAFE Career Expos

Central Queenslanders have attended CQUniversity's TAFE Careers Expos in their hundreds on 18 January' seeking new careers' new skills' and new paths in life.

The simultaneous events at CQU's Gladstone' Mackay and Rockhampton campuses' allowed residents to talk face-to-face with teachers and staff about their study options for 2023.

One such attendee' Esther Doherty' enquired about nursing and paramedical science.

"I'm going into my last year of school' and I have been exploring nursing and paramedicine and the more I've been looking into it' I'm really excited about getting into paramedicine'" she said.

"I'm looking to start towards a career in paramedicine with my Diploma' but being as I'm still in school I'd be really interested in looking at the Start TAFE Now program."

Nia Barry knew all about Start TAFE Now' having already undertaken a Certificate II in Animal Care through the program.

"Now that I've finished high school I'm looking into further study options'" she said.

"I completed my Certificate II in Animal Care and I am really interested in continuing towards studies where I can work with animals.

"I'd love to work on farms and one day become a vet and I know it takes a lot of study to get there' but it's definitely something I want to do."

CQU Deputy Vice-President VET Peter Heilbuth said the TAFE Career Expos were the perfect way for people to learn how life-changing TAFE training can be.

"It's one thing to look online and self-source information but it's great to have events like this where people can speak one-on-one with teachers and specialty staff who are experts in their field' and even become oriented with the campus where they'll potentially be studying'" he said.

"It's an encouraging' supportive and enthusiastic environment to be a part of especially when you're taking those first steps towards studying towards your future career. It really makes a difference.

"Many vocational courses allow you to get started in study without the requirement of strict academic pre-requisites' which makes it accessible for everybody."

Short courses' apprenticeships and traineeships' certificate-level and diploma-level courses in aged care' animal studies' automotive' beauty' business' childcare' community services' construction' dental' disability' hospitality' human resources' information technology' justice' management' nursing' project management' tourism' visual arts' are just some of the areas on offer for CQ residents.
