CQUni's horticulture training helps John grow his passion for the environment and secure employment
John Swain looks to be cultivating a long career in horticulture after his training with CQUniversity TAFE helped him secure employment in Rockhampton.
John said his training with CQUni TAFE has also helped him follow his passion for the environment.
"I have always had a passion for nature and environmental issues, and having enjoyed my experience at (then CQ TAFE) some 20 years ago so I thought it was time again to apply myself for a challenge and learn about something I really enjoy doing," he said.
"I recently completed my Certificate III in Conservation and Land Management and almost immediately gained employment with Ecosure Rockhampton as field vegetation officer.
"I feel the training provided best prepared me for work in the environmental industry by gaining hands on experience with local issues, licensing required for working with chemicals and a strong knowledge of plant identification and weed control techniques. I am very happy with my learning experience."
John said he received "great support" from his teacher Kay Pearson to stay focused on his studies during the COVID-19 lockdown last year. The practical training gave him the skills essential in the conservation industry.
As an Indigenous student, John also acknowledged the support he received from the Office of Indigenous Education.
"The completion of this course has really opened the door to many opportunities for me and my family,"
he said.
"CQUni plays an important part in the Central Queensland community by providing world class facilities for education' employing local people and participation in community environmental issues."
