Profiling Upper Limb Injuries in Police Units

Thesis Abstract

Using established and validated fitness tests and biomechanical measurements from overhead sport, an upper limb profile will be developed for a selected sample of police officers. This data set will then be used as a base for a prospective cohort project monitoring for officers that incur upper limb injury over a two year period. Significance will look to be established between injury and performance deficits from initial testing in the hopes of developing appropriate prognostics.

Why My Research is Important/Impacts

Police officers incur higher rates of shoulder and upper limb injuries when compared to other tactical occupations. As such, identifying predisposing factors and building effective prevention and rehabilitation strategies is paramount to reducing time lost due to officer injury and improving the financial burden on local governments.
