Thesis Abstract
Irregularities in track geometry can progress significantly between the infrequent measurements taken by traditional purpose-built track geometry measuring cars. Addressing degraded geometry early can reduce maintenance costs or in severe cases avoid derailment. Instrumented revenue vehicles are being utilised by some track managers to provide more frequent track monitoring. This research topic will investigate the use of new technology and/or new algorithms to provide improvements to existing systems or provide a new system at a competitive cost. This could allow more general application to revenue vehicles and improvements to condition monitoring and asset management.
