The Australian Physiotherapy Association (APA) recognises the importance of a strong Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander physiotherapy workforce and the significant contribution that physiotherapists make to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health. The APA strives to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander physiotherapists and grow the number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people entering the profession. As part of our commitment, the APA is offering the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Physiotherapy Scholarship to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students who are currently studying towards a physiotherapy degree.


To be eligible to apply for the Scholarship, applicants must:

  • Be an Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person; and
  • Be enrolled in a physiotherapy degree at an Australian university.

For the purposes of this Scholarship, an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person is someone:

  • Who is of Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent.
  • Who identifies as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person; and
  • Is accepted as such by the community in which he or she lives or has lived.

The Scholarship will be awarded to successful recipients on the recommendation of an APA selection panel. Preference will be given to applicants who do not already hold any other scholarship or bursary. Applicants must declare on the application form whether they hold a current scholarship or bursary. Scholarship recipients are required to be/become APA members and commit to maintaining membership for five (5) years after completion of their studies.

Required Documentation

The following documentation is required to complete your application:

  • An unofficial transcript or letter from your university confirming your academic results.
  • Formal proof of enrolment in a physiotherapy degree at an Australian university.
  • Written statements from TWO referees in support of your application. These should comment on your work and/or academic study and your involvement with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people and communities, and your suitability for a career in physiotherapy.

Applicants are required to complete an application form which can be found on The Australian Physiotherapy Association website. and submit it, along with the required documentation by Friday the 29th of March, 2024. Applicants should also ensure they have read and understood the full Terms and Conditions of the Scholarship.
