Chronic illness will not hold me back
Brooke Williams

My name is Brooke Williams, and I am completing a Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (Honours).

Due to chronic illness, I was forced to give up my career as a Sports/ Remedial Massage Therapist, instead focusing on my studies, whilst undergoing hospital procedures and treatments.

Receiving my CQUniCares Student Success Scholarship has helped to purchase textbooks, update my obsolete laptop, and assisted with travel and accommodation related expenses to attend residential schools in Rockhampton.

This scholarship has helped towards covering my study expenses. This has taken off a lot of financial pressure trying to cover my study expenses while also trying to balance living and medical expenses as a mature aged student. My new laptop has a webcam so that I can now participate in live tutorials/lectures for the first time, and with the updated technology it has made researching and using endnote for assessments much easier. I used the remaining scholarship funds this term towards my flight and accommodation expenses for residential school so that I can safely get to and attend my practicals.

I am a strong believer that my condition will not define me, nor will it be an excuse for holding me back in pursuing my career and life aspirations.

My goal is to work in immunology in a research laboratory to help find a cure and develop novel treatments for autoimmune diseases to improve patient’s quality of life.

I am very grateful to be awarded a CQUniCares Student Success Scholarship and want to sincerely thank the generous donors who make this scholarship possible.
