HLT54121 Diploma of Nursing reflects the role of an enrolled nurse working under the direct or indirect supervision of a registered nurse.

Enrolled nurses provide nursing care for people across the health care continuum and at all stages of life.

To be eligible to apply for registration as an enrolled nurse and to practice in Australia, individuals must complete a Diploma of Nursing program accredited by the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC) and approved as ‘an approved program of study’ by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) in accordance with the Enrolled Nurse Accreditation Standards. To confirm the education provider holds the necessary accreditation check the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) at www.ahpra.gov.au.

The scope of practice for enrolled nurses is determined by legislative requirements and the policies and procedures of the employing organisation.

HLT54121 may contribute to the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia’s (NMBA) registration requirements to practice as an enrolled nurse.

HLT54121 is delivered over 18 months with observation of performance of 400 hours in a work context/ Clinical placement. It is essential for students to demonstrate consistency of performance throughout assessments and demonstrate consistency throughout the required range of workplace situations.

For each of the 3 Stages in the Diploma of Nursing, all students are required to attend four (4) blocks of three (3) day mandatory residential schools that are held at our Cairns, Townsville, Mackay, Rockhampton, and Bundaberg campuses from 8:30am to 3pm.   

Mixed-Mode students are also required to attend their online tutorial classes which will be held on Mondays and Fridays for the February intake and Thursdays and Fridays for the July intake.   

Students studying on-campus in Rockhampton will be required to attend weekly on-campus tutorials on Monday - Wednesday from 8:30am-3pm as well as the residential schools.

Acceptance of applications are at the discretion of CQUniversity. Prior offers to this course may negate subsequent admission.


Inherent requirements: Students applying for the Diploma of Nursing should be aware of and be able to fulfil the inherent requirements for this course. The inherent requirements are the essential capabilities, knowledge, behaviors and skills that are needed to complete a unit or course.

Completion of the BKSB online literacy and numeracy assessment is required before enrolment, unless the student has completed an equal or higher-level course.

Minimum Age Requirement: Students must be 18 before course completion.

English Proficiency Requirements: All Diploma of Nursing applicants must meet one of the following:

Primary Language English: Complete at least six years of primary and secondary education taught and assessed solely in English, with at least two years between years 7 and 12, in a recognised country (Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Republic of Ireland, South Africa, UK, USA).
English Proficiency Test: If the above does not apply, an English proficiency test is required. Results must be within two years of course start date.


Accepted Tests and Scores:

IELTS (Academic): One sitting or two sittings within six months.
Overall score 7+ in each sitting.
At least 7 in each component across two sittings.
No component score below 6.5.
OET: One or two sittings within six months.
Tested in all four components.
At least a B in each component across two sittings.
No score below C.
PTE Academic: One or two sittings within six months.
Overall score 65+ in each sitting.
At least 65 in each communicative skill across two sittings.
No skill score below 58.
TOEFL iBt: One or two sittings within six months.
Total score 94+ in each sitting.
At least 24 listening, 24 reading, 27 writing, 23 speaking across two sittings.
No score below 20 listening, 19 reading, 24 writing, 20 speaking.

Fees & Scholarships

Fee for Service/ Full Fee

Fee for Service/Full Fee occurs when the full tuition fee is charged to students. This may occur when the course is not included in government subsidy program/s or the student is not eligible for a government subsidy. These students are obligated to cover the entire cost. Co-Contribution and Co-Contribution Concessional Fee

Some government subsidies, such as Higher Level Skills (HLS), will require the individual to contribute to the cost of their training through a co-contribution fee. Government subsidies are subject to eligibility.

The fee will vary based on the course chosen and the eligibility of the student for a concession rate. The co-contribution fee represents the total cost to the student for tuition. There are other costs that the student may have to pay, including but not limited to uniforms and course resources. This will vary depending on the training. The Higher Level Skills program is an initiative provided by the Queensland Government to provide eligible individuals with access to subsidised training of a Certificate IV or above qualification. Individuals will be required to contribute to the cost of their training through a co-contribution fee.

This course is included in the Australian Government’s VET Student Loan (VSL) program, assisting eligible students pay tuition fees.
