Podiatrists are health care professionals who deal with the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of medical and surgical conditions of the feet and lower limbs.

The student-led Podiatry Clinic at the Rockhampton Health Clinic is supervised by highly qualified and experienced registered podiatrists.

Appointments will be undertaken by Podiatry students ranging from their 2nd year of study to their 4th year of study. These appointments will be supervised by highly qualified and experienced registered podiatrists.

The appointments generally follow a three step an approach of: history taking, performing assessments and undertaking a treatment plan. Appointments generally take between 60-90 minutes.

Skin and nail problems is something podiatrists will see regularly, some of the common things we can treat are:

  • Hyperkeratosis and heloma durum’s – these are also known as callus and corns
  • Nail Pathologies – including thickened or fungal nails
  • Warts – also known as verruca
  • Ingrown nails –There are many treatment options for ingrown nails which include conservative treatments, nail bracing right through to more invasive procedures such as nail surgery.
For some people, neurological and/or vascular testing are assessments that we can perform to further understand how the nerves are functioning or how well someones blood flow may be to their feet. These are commonly performed in diabetic foot checks, or people with other complex medical conditions or have other risks for disease to their lower legs such as smoking. These assessments include using specialised equipment such as doppler ultrasounds and photoplethysmogram’s to detect blood flow and a range of different functional testing for sensation and function of the nervous system.

A large part of what the scope of podiatrists can deal with is biomechanics and foot pain of the lower limb, this can encompass the biomechanics of the hip, legs, knees, ankles and feet. Students are trained to perform a range of orthopedic tests to help diagnose injuries or pathologies and come up with rehabilitation programs tailored to the patient’s needs. Specialised equipment such as an EMED platform, hand-held dynamometers, or specialised gait analysis pressure treadmills may be used during the appointments.

Some of the things that podiatrists are trained to use to help with treatment are:

  • Orthotic manufacturing and prescribing
  • Taping techniques
  • Shockwave therapy
  • Therapeutic Ultrasound
  • Massage
  • Stretching and strengthening programs
  • Return to sport programs
  • Footwear adjustments and education

Podiatrists learn all about paediatrics and the problems that may occur in kid’s feet. During our paediatrics appointments, there are a number of things that podiatrists can assess and manage, some of the common presenting issues are:

  • Development issues
  • Meeting developmental milestones
  • In toeing and toe walking
  • Pain
Appointments are very educational to meet the needs of parents and guardians and are also tailored to be interactive and fun for kids.
