Speech Pathology

Speech Pathologists are allied health professionals who assess and treat people across the lifespan with speech, language, stuttering, voice, literacy and swallowing disorders. A Speech Pathologist can help children and adults to communicate more effectively with family and friends; at school, socially, and in the workplace.  The Speech Pathology clinics at CQU offer comprehensive services for both adults and children, focusing on enhancing communication abilities across various aspects of life.

For adults assessment and intervention, services include:

  • Voice disorders, including gender-affirmative voice practices and voice care.
  • Speech and language disorders resulting from Traumatic Brain Injuries or strokes.
  • Degenerative conditions such as Dementia and Parkinson’s Disease.
  • Accent modification for adults aiming to improve communication clarity in personal and professional settings.
  • Adults who stutter.
  • Multidisciplinary clinics that provide integrated care alongside other healthcare professionals.

For children assessment and intervention, services include:

  • Screenings and outreach clinics to support early intervention.
  • Speech and language difficulties.
  • Stuttering.
  • Literacy difficulties.
  • Feeding concerns.
  • Multidisciplinary clinics that provide integrated care alongside other healthcare professionals.

Adult and paediatric Speech Pathology services are provided by students under the supervision of registered Speech Pathologists. Collaboratively we complete assessment and intervention specific to you or your child’s needs.

Initial Consultation includes:

  • A comprehensive case history to evaluate and understand your current communication concerns of you and/or your child.
  • The assessment process may take multiple sessions.

What to bring to your initial sessions:

  • Any relevant reports or imaging results related to your presenting concerns.
  • You and/or your child’s medication list.

Further sessions may include:

  • Comprehensive assessment.
  • Goal setting.
  • Intervention.
  • Education.
  • Self-management programs (e.g. home programs).

Telehealth allows you to connect with a healthcare professional online through a secure video and audio call using Zoom. CQUniversity Health Clinics are now offering telehealth consultations to staff, students, and the wider community.

Please enquire with reception staff to see if your practitioner can facilitate this. There is no need for you to create a Zoom account. The CQU Health Clinic Administration Team will send you an email to your preferred email address with your Zoom session information.

To ensure you have the best telehealth experience:

  • Please contact the clinic as early as possible before your scheduled appointment time if you cannot locate your email with the Zoom meeting link.
  • Ensure your laptop, mobile or device is charged up and you have a working camera and microphone.
  • Ensure you turn on both your camera and microphone when joining the Zoom meeting.
  • Space – Set up in a quiet, well-lit area which is large enough to allow you to perform exercise if required.
  • Privacy – you will need to be in an area where you feel comfortable enough discussing your health condition and wearing clothing you are comfortable to move in.
