With dreams of a career in engineering, CQUniversity student Logan Crosby will be spending a year in one of the most globally renowned locations for engineering studies, thanks to a 2024 New Colombo Plan scholarship.

The high-achieving Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) and Diploma of Professional Practice student is excited by the chance to study abroad at the National University of Singapore from August 2024.

“This is an amazing opportunity to study at a university renowned for their strong sustainability ethos, and also listed in the world’s best 10 universities for engineering,” Logan said.

“When I heard my application for the New Colombo Plan was successful, I was unbelievably ‘over the moon’ ... it took a while for it to sink in.”

Logan will study engineering in Singapore for nine months and then work in the country as part of a three-month internship, hopefully at either Rolls Royce or Boeing – two global brands that have invested largely into sustainability.

He hopes the overseas experience will stand him in good stead for a career in the resources industry which he said remains “incredibly important for Australia’s future”.

“I’m hoping this experience, made possible by the New Colombo Plan, will propel me into the industry and get me where I want to go.”

With about a $65,000 contribution by the scholarship provider to both his tuition and living expenses for the year, Logan is all too aware of the amazing opportunity that he has worked hard to achieve.

“I’m looking forward to the university experience in Singapore where some of the best engineering academics are.”

But with all the excitement comes some hesitation for the 18-year-old who calls Gladstone home as he contemplates his first overseas trip on his own.

“Living at the Capricornia College in Rockhampton during my first year of study has enabled me to get used to being away from family, but I am nervous about travelling on my own.”

However, Logan has six months to calm his nerves and prepare for the adventure of a lifetime.

This week, he meets up with other New Colombo Plan scholarship recipients in Canberra where he hopes to establish future connections and learn more about what to expect during this year overseas.

The New Colombo Plan is a signature initiative of the Australian Government which aims to lift knowledge of the Indo-Pacific in Australia by supporting Australian undergraduates to study and undertake internships in the region.

CQUniversity had two other recipients awarded NCP scholarships for 2024 including Amy Mann and Clodagh Semple-Ashlin.
