Hundreds of prospective students eager to enrol in job-ready courses gathered at the CQU TAFE Careers Expo held across CQUniversity’s Rockhampton, Gladstone and Mackay campuses.

In conjunction with the Queensland government’s Fee-Free TAFE funding and various subsidies on offer, CQUniversity is delivering vocational training at low or no cost to meet the job demands of Central Queensland’s communities and industries.

Industries reflected in the Australian Government’s Skills Priority List such as health and support care workers, automotive trades and childcare workers are among the list of subsidised courses available, which were also reflected in many registered attendees’ courses of interest.

CQUniversity’s Deputy Vice-President (VET and Business Development) Mr Peter Heilbuth said there was no better time to enrol into a CQU TAFE course, describing the opportunities at CQU as a one-stop-shop for regional communities.

“CQU TAFE offers wonderful opportunities for a diverse range of people – from school students all the way through to those who may be more mature and seeking to get back into work, change career or expand their opportunities and skills in their current career,” Mr Heilbuth said.

“One of the many great things about CQUniversity being Queensland’s only dual sector University (offering both TAFE and tertiary qualifications) is that students can potentially pursue their study at multiple levels of complexity with us, right from foundational VET courses, through to Diplomas and onto degrees and postgraduate study.

"We are the proverbial ‘one-stop shop’ for our students and our region!”

Rockhampton local and mum-of-two Kateasha Fritz attended the expo at the University’s Canning Street campus with a keen interest to pursue a Diploma of Beauty Therapy, an area which she has been interested in since she was a young girl, despite her dream being on hold when she became a mother.

With her children now at an age where she can more easily pursue the idea of study, Kateasha is looking forward to turning her dream into a reality, and hopes to also one day run her own beauty business.

“Beauty is something I’ve grown up around – from experimenting with nails, to hair, and makeup and it’s something I’ve wanted to learn more seriously about for a long time,” Kateasha said.

“I’ve had so many of my questions answered here today, and the support has been amazing – I know that studying is something I will be able to achieve even whilst juggling my family, just knowing the support that’s available as well as the blended delivery of online and on-campus learning.

“Attending the expo today and talking to the teachers and seeing how everything works has given me that extra push to get started, and I’m so excited.”
