STEPS to psychological success
Experiencing the challenges of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has inspired CQUniversity student Daniel Riley to assist others dealing with neurological disorders.
By combining his studies with his lived experience, the current Bachelor of Psychological Science student said he hoped to advocate for greater awareness, acceptance and resources for individuals.
“I was diagnosed with ADHD as an adult after years of dealing with psychologists and psychiatrists,” Daniel explained.
“After successfully seeing results once I was getting the right help, psychology was something I came to appreciate and found complex enough to focus on.
“I want to work with neurodivergent persons and support people in their individual experiences as they identify and build strengths.”
After struggling throughout his schooling years, the Townsville local never believed university would be an option for him.
It wasn’t until he discovered CQUniversity’s Skills for Tertiary Education Preparatory Studies (STEPS) program that Daniel found the guidance he needed to navigate his academic journey.
“Because of my ADHD I had difficulties with schooling in the past and never finished high school.
“In 2021, I decided to give study another go as a mature-aged student. I enrolled in a dual diploma of Mental Health/Alcohol and Other Drugs while working online at another institution.
“I struggled on every assessment, both due to motivation and with academic ability. I had not done essays or any form of academia for more than six years and was not receiving the support I required,” he said.
“I needed to go back to learn some basics of studying and learn how to learn so that I could move forward.
"STEPS offered me that assistance. It helped with essays, unpacking assessment questions and organising myself with the tasks that go into the larger overall assessments.”
Daniel said his path to higher education took a positive turn at CQU, where he found a supportive community and access to resources that helped him both excel academically and personally.
“Upon completion of STEPS I was offered direct entry into my psychological science degree.
“I have found that the mixed method of both online and campus study that CQU offers has been immensely helpful for me,” he explained.
“I can complete the work from home if reasons arise that I cannot come to the campus, I do not have to worry about failing if something comes up with family or my health.”
Reflecting on his growth and resilience, Daniel said he is motivated to continue his academic pursuits and delve deeper into the psychology field.
“Having overcome my series of personal obstacles I would like to assist other people going through those difficult periods of life,” Daniel said.
“Once I finish my undergraduate degree I plan to continue the honours component of psychological science.
“From there, I will either pursue the master's degree to go on to the Clinical Psychologist and Clinical Neuropsychologist path or complete a PhD to research areas in social neuroscience.”
