World-first safe beach accessibility course
CQUniversity has launched the first microcredential in beach accessibility, designed to facilitate safe and inclusive beach experiences for people of all abilities.
The U-BEACH Introduction to Beach Accessibility microcredential is the first of its kind in providing essential education on navigating terrain and facility challenges when accessing beach environments.
Developed by CQU neurological physiotherapy lecturer and research higher degree candidate Sasha Job, the microcredential is a key component of her research, The Universal Beach Accessibility Hub (U‐BEACH): A pathway to increase physical activity participation, health and wellbeing in individuals with mobility limitations.
Ms Job said the innovative course was co-designed with health professionals and people with lived experience to ensure its practical relevance.
“This microcredential features real-world learning activities that explores disability diversity and highlights the importance of equal beach access for everyone,” she explained.
“The modules cover essential topics such as accessible beach elements, communication, safety considerations, manual handling for beach access and the safe use of widely available beach mobility equipment, including beach pathways, sand-adapted walking aids and beach wheelchairs.”
Modules include demonstration videos, written guidelines and links to useful resources.
While the microcredential is available for anyone wishing to understand beach accessibility and the safe use of specialised beach mobility equipment, Ms Job emphasised its value for people engaged with individuals who have disability or mobility challenges.
“We strongly encourage surf lifesavers, disability support workers and carers, health professionals, community groups, councils looking to improve beach accessibility, and tourism operators seeking to provide inclusive experiences for visitors with disability to consider the course.”
Completion of the non-creditable micro-credential also includes a digital badge that can be shared on social networks and added to professional portfolios.
