Liticha highlights CQUni training after being named Equity VET Student of the Year

Newly named Equity VET Student of the Year Liticha McMullen has acknowledged her Certificate IV in Human Resources training at CQUniversity.

Liticha was announced as the winner of the category at the 2021 Central Queensland Regional Queensland Training Awards. She was one of two CQUni-trained students who won during the online ceremony.

On being named a finalist Liticha said she felt "extremely proud to be nominated".

"Winning the Equity VET Student of the Year Award for Central Queensland Region means so much to me. Winning this award is recognition for all the hard work and time I have invested and the barriers I have overcome in completing my Certificate IV in Human Resources. This experience has been absolutely amazing'" she said.

"The assistance and support I received from CQUni whilst undertaking my Certificate IV in Human Resources was fundamental in keeping me on track and ensuring that I completed the course prior to the completion date. Additionally' the option of being able to use the campus facilities as a quiet place to complete assessments was greatly utilised by myself. Being able to remove myself from the work environment' was significant in balancing work and study commitments and completing this course."

As Employee Services Officer at Mackay Regional Council' Liticha is responsible for supporting and administering training and development programs' providing support in the induction and onboarding of new employees' supporting the recruitment process' managing Human Resource Records and providing other administrative support.

She said CQUniversity's Human Resources training put her in good stead for the role.

"The Certificate IV in Human Resources was a requirement of my employment as a Human Resources Trainee with Mackay Regional Council'" she said.

"I was very surprised by the amount of work required to be undertaken for a Certificate IV' the teachers were amazing in providing support and were always readily available to answer any concerns that I had.

"When I first applied for the position of Human Resources Trainee at Mackay Regional Council I had a base knowledge of Human Resources' but I saw it as a wonderful opportunity to build on my existing knowledge of Law. I have found Human Resources to be extremely interesting. The mode of delivery made the content easy to follow and worked really well with helping me balance work and study."

She said the skills and knowledge she acquired came to the fore when she was People Capability Officer (Acting) for a time.

"The Certificate IV in Human Resources has helped me understand the importance of Workforce Planning and People Capability and the essential nature of these elements in being able to support and achieve the objectives set out in the Corporate Plan'" she said.

"I am extremely grateful for this opportunity at Mackay Regional Council. Since working at Mackay Regional Council' I have been able to achieve two long term goals including purchasing my first family home for my son and myself and purchasing a new car.

"Thank you to both the People and Culture team and the Employee Services team for all of their support while I was undertaking the Certificate IV in Human Resources. This has been an amazing experience that has provided me with wonderful opportunities.

CQUni Deputy Vice-Chancellor VET Operations Peter Heilbuth congratulated Liticha on her achievement.

"CQUni is very pleased for Liticha. The win demonstrates the quality of our vocational education and training'" he said.

Two other CQUni-trained students were also nominated. Jack Mitchell in the Harry Hauenschild Apprentice of the Year and Latitia Briggs in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student of the Year category.
