Nursing is characterised by increased levels of workplace adversity (NZNO, 2009), which has reduced psychological functioning in nurses (Jackson et al., 2007). The cultivation of resilience in nurses is viewed as a means to overcome adversity (McAllister & McKinnon, 2009). Resilience research has focused on the individual level (Hegney et al., 2015b), while failing to appreciate the role the environment has influencing resilience. The primary aim of this project is to investigate the impact of workplace factors on resilience in NZ nurses. A mixed methods approach will be used to investigate the impact of workplace factors on resilience in nurses.

The proposed research attempts to uncover the relationship between the environment and resilience in nurses. This will advance our understanding of resilience in nurses, which may lead to alternative approaches in the way health service organisations deal with workplace adversity, resulting in better outcomes for nurses, patients and health service providers.
