To explore the understanding of the experiences of shared decision making of adult children of parents in residential aged care settings.

A narrative inquiry method will be used to explore the understanding of the experiences of shared decision making of adult children of parents in residential aged care settings. To date little is known about shared decision-making (SDM) in aged care especially with respect to an adult children's understanding of, and preference of involvement. Failure to exclude adult children and understand and recognise the importance of SDM and the role adult children play; could significantly impact on the care outcomes of their elderly parent reducing the overall quality and satisfaction and experience for both patient and family members.

This research will elucidate knowledge and an understanding of the common challenges of SDM amongst adult children. In particular, identifying their understanding and preferred involvement, and identify what factors shape or hinder the process of SDM. Lastly, identifying what support they require when making important health decisions.
